Apple Computer Inc has picked Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Shiva Corp as long-term partner for the development of Point-to-Point Protocol technology to enable multiprotocol remote access to AppleTalk networks using modems. With the first Shiva product based on the joint development effort expected at the end of the year, the companies say that the plan is to implement Point-to-Point Protocol in future remote access systems such as AppleTalk Remote Access. Shiva was chosen, says Apple, for its expertise with Macintosh computers, AppleTalk networking, and the Point-to-Point Protocol. Shiva also says it plans to use the PPP to extend its LanRover/E remote server’s capabilities to include support for AppleTalk Remote Access, and for Novell Inc NetWare, Microsoft Corp Windows for WorkGroups and TCP/IP.
