Apple Computer Inc will use its Macworld show in San Francisco this week to make a slew of announcements, including a new, faster version of its G3 desktop computer and the latest version of its operating system, Mac OS X. According to industry reports the Cupertino, California based Apple’s key announcement is the release of new, iMac-styled Power Macintosh desktop computers. The show opens today, January 5, with a keynote speech from interim chief executive Steve Jobs in which he is expected to announce souped-up versions of the G3 desktop. The base machine, code- named Yosemite, is expected to feature a high-speed processor, with clock speeds between 333MHz and 450MHz, and look similar in design to Apple’s translucent consumer desktop, the iMac. Faster versions of the iMac are now expected to appear later this month. And, as reported in Computergram earlier this month (CI No 3,557), there won’t be any unveiling of the company’s consumer portable device, called WebMate, although Jobs is likely to announce Quicktime 4.0, the version supporting streaming video, at the show.
