If Apple were to do $3,500m this fiscal, it would end up about twice the size of Data General Corp, bigger still than the likes of Prime Computer, giving it the mus-cle to call the shots in any merger exercise to create a more broadly-based company – something it will need to consider given that with the slow decline of the Apple II, it will increasingly be seen as a one-product company facing the danger of saturating its market.
