Apple Computer Inc has launched its Newton MessagePad 120 in the UK as the first Personal Digital Assistant with full Groupe Speciale Mobile digital cellular support built in. The MessagePad was launched here in the context of an agreement with British Telecommunications Plc and Cellnet Mobile Communications Ltd to provide MessagePad users with electronic mail, facsimile and other services over Cellnet’s digital network. A similar package is centred around the Apple PowerBook 500. The MessagePad mobile package comprises the 120 itself, a 2110 mobile phone from Nokia Mobile Phones, Apple Notion and Newton Mail software, a Nokia DTP-2 data board and a Cellnet airtime agreement. The new version of the handheld has 2Mb RAM, a PCMCIA slot, and features improved screen clarity and a removable protective lid. Clive Girling, product marketing manager for the Newton, believes that it is on the verge of reaching its critical mass in terms of sales, and his goal is to have the Apple or Newton badge on practically every Personal Digital Assistant in the world, regardless of which company manufactures it under licence. The much-maligned handwriting recognition technology, though improved with this version, was played down in favour of the communications options. Users will be provided with a single point of contact for support as part of the agreement with British Telecom Mobile. The second mobile system is designed with the Apple PowerBook 500 at its heart, though the package does not include the computer. Both packages enable users to connect to a wide range of services, including Apple’s eWorld and AppleLink, to send and receive electronic mail, and facsimile transmission. The PowerBook can also receive faxes. The MessagePad 120 bundle will retail at a price well under ú1,000. The MessagePad 110 is cut to ú350, and upgrades are available from all Newton models. The PowerBook add-on, not including computer, will sell for under ú700. Both packages will be available in the spring. A GSM connection kit for the PowerBook, consisting only of the software will sell for ú80 and is available now.
