Apple Computer Inc sold more personal computers – 1.27m as against 1.23m – than IBM in the US in 1988, for the first time since IBM entered the market in 1981, according to Dataquest, but the San Jose research outfit reckons that IBM will regain the lead in unit sales this year – but the firm sees the biggest threat coming from Taiwanese and South Korean firms, which sold about 4.4m boxes in the US in 1988.
