Apple Computer Inc reports that Release 16 of its MPW Pro and ETO Essentials*Tools*Objects have begun shipping to developers. One of the most notable additions included for cross-system gurus is an alpha release of IBM Corp’s System Object Model run-time software. This will be important for anyone with an eye on developing OpenDOC or Taligent frameworks. The new release also includes: the first beta release of MrC and MrCpp, new C and C++ compilers for developing native Power Macintosh applications – the company claims the compilers run up to four times faster than Apple’s first C/C++ compiler for Power Macintosh; an alpha release of the PPCLink, the MPW-based linker for native Power Macintosh applications, which in addition to being faster than the previous, emulated version, can now generate executable applications directly; version 1.1 (final) of PPCAsm, the PowerPC assembler; a beta release of MPW p2c, an Object Pascal to C/C++ source code translation system; version 3.1.2 (final) of MacApp; an early, pre-release of MacApp 3.5 which adds support for AppleScript, PowerTalk mailers, and Macintosh Drag and Drop; version 2.0.1 (final) of Ad Lib, a powerful user-interface editing tool for building views for the MacApp 3.x application framework, which replaces MacApps old ViewEdit application; an alpha release of the Code Fragment Manager runtime software for 680 by 0-based Macintosh systems, CFM-68K supports the development of shared libraries and drop-in code modules for 68000-based applications using programming techniques similar to those used today for the development of native Power Macintosh applications. MPW Pro costs $500 in the US, on CD-ROM, with upgrades from older MPW-based products costing $300. Essential Tools Objects costs $1,100 and comes as a three-issue-per-year CD-ROM-based subscription. Both MPW Pro and Essential Tools Objects are available immediately through a Personal Digital Assistant.
