APPLE SELLS ITS FOUNTAIN FACTORY TO SCI SYSTEMS

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple Computer Inc has raised a little of what it needs (see news analysis section today) by winning agreement from the major contract electronics manufacturer SCI Systems Inc which will take over Apple’s Fountain, Colorado manufacturing facility. Under terms of the three-year agreement, SCI will assume responsibility for manufacturing Apple products at the Fountain site. Financial terms were not disclosed. Since 1991, the 360,000 square foot facility has manufactured subassemblies and finished computers, including PowerBooks. About 1100 employees work at the facility and SCI said it plans to offer employment to the majority of Apple employees currently working there, and subject to approval, expects to take possession of the plant in June.
