With the launch of a range of new PowerPC-based server products, Apple Computer Inc is making a bid to penetrate the lucrative project market in the former Soviet Union. Apple Computer CIS says it is now shipping its new Mac personal computer-based servers in Russia. The products are the Network Server 700/150 (500/132) and the Work group Server 8550/132 (7250/120). The local price for a no-frills configuration of one of these machines is $14,500. According to Dr Michael H Beier, Large Accounts Manager at Apple Computer Eastern Europe/CIS, the company has already won a few projects in cluding the automation of the Tax Ministry of Bashkorkostan (formally Bashkiria) – several dozen PowerPC-based servers and 2,500 Apple Macs; the Russian Ministry of Education with 2,000 Macs; and the City Administration of the capital of Korelia with 1,000 Macs.
