IBM Corp and Microsoft Corp have announced support for Apple Computer Inc’s AppleTalk local area networking system in their products and Apple has unveiled AppleShare Server 3.0 and AppleTalk Remote Access software as enhancements to AppleTalk. Server 3.0 is designed to meet the security, performance and multitasking requirements of larger workgroups and departments: it now provides access to centralised shared storage for up to 120 concurrent users and queued access for up to five network print ers. The AppleTalk Remote Access software enables individuals using a Mac under System 7.0 to gain dial-up access to all their AppleTalk net work resources from any location using modems and standard telephone lines. AppleShare Server 3.0 will be available in December for $1,200; Remote Access available now at $200.
