APPLE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER QUITS

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple Computer Inc lost another top executive yesterday with the departure of chief operating officer and long-time associate of chief executive Gil Amelio, George Scalise. He’s gone over to serve as president of the Semiconductor Industry Association. Apple will not look for a replacement and will eliminate the position. Scalise said he had accomplished all he had set out to do, including helping the company decide what it was to do with the Newton handhelds, but Apple wasn’t saying what that was: stay tuned, Scalise told Reuters. Scalise joined the company just over a year ago, coming over with Amelio from National Semiconductor Corp, where he was

executive VP and chief administrative officer.
