Apple to drag Google’s Android 4.1 OS in Samsung’s patent infringement war

Apple has been ordered to pay $368m to VirnetX for infringing for patents related to its Facetime video calling service

By CBR Staff Writer

US based Apple is planning to add Google’s Android 4.1 operating system that powers Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet to its patent infringement lawsuit scheduled for trial in 2014.

The firm has urged the US federal court in Silicon Valley to add Android OS Jelly Bean OS in its long-running patent war with Samsung over mobile gadgets and the judge said to have taken the request under consideration.

However, Apple has been ordered to pay $368m to VirnetX for infringing for patents related to its Facetime video calling service, which is a virtual- private-network technology that allows video calls on mobile devices.

VirnetX said in a statement that the jury in a federal court in Texas ordered the payment for infringing four of its patents and that the court will hear post-trial motions in the upcoming weeks.

"We are extremely pleased with the outcome of our suit with Apple," said Kendall Larsen, VirnetX chief executive and president," VirnetX said.

"This victory further establishes the importance of our patent portfolio."

VirnetX also alleged that the US based iPhpne maker should have paid a licensing fee to deploy the technologies allowing for secure connections through Facetime.
