Apple has reportedly released a low cost, wired, version of its iMac exclusively for students.

According to a Mac Rumors report, the low-end model is marked "Education only" and is not available for individuals.

The report said that the model which Apple "quietly launched" is priced at $999, around $150 less than the base model of the commercially available iMac.

Though the new model lacks many features present in the latest Macs, it comes with OS X Lion and has a 21-inch LCD.

The new computer does not feature Apple’s new Thunderbolt port, but comes with an Intel Dual-Core i3 processor, a 250-GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM.and AMD Radeon HD 6750.

Apple had made similar move in 2006, when it had offered an education-only model. The 20-inch model is still available for $899.
