Apple has begun negotiations earlier this year with EPIX for rights to stream content on devices including a future TV that would arrive in early 2013.

Movie streaming service provider EPIX is operated by three movie studios, including Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Lions Gate Entertainment and Viacom’s Paramount Pictures.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was quoted by Reuters as saying in an April 23 conference call with analysts that the DVD and streaming service was in a broad range of discussions with EPIX about how to operate most effectively for both of them.

One of the sources told the news agency that any discussions would apply to its set-top box and also to upcoming devices that stream content, though the talks are in the primary phase with no deal expected to be reached shortly.

Currently, Netflix pays $200m for exclusive streaming rights to EPIX movies which will last through September this year, after which Apple could require the EPIX platform in early 2013.

Apple TV set-top box now sells at $99 and allows users stream online content from Netflix and the MLB channel.
