Apple lodges complaint against Motorola Mobility with EU

Regarding the enforcement of MMI's standards-essential patents against it allegedly in breach of MMI's FRAND commitments

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple lodged a complaint with the EU anti-trust regulators to intervene and resolve a patent dispute between the company and Motorola Mobility.

This follows apprehensions raised by the regulators from both US and EU who said they would try to prevent companies from putting pressure on one other by using essential patents, according to Reuters.

Motorola said that it was notified by the European Commission about the Apple complaint.

Motorola Mobility said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it received a letter from the European Commission notifying it that the Commission had received a complaint against Motorola Mobility by Apple regarding the enforcement of MMI’s standards-essential patents against Apple allegedly in breach of MMI’s FRAND (fair and reasonable) commitments.

Meanwhile, EU had launched an investigation into Samsung’s use of patents to sue Apple in Europe last week, causing regulators to feel apprehensive about the matter even as they gave Google a go-ahead to acquire Motorola Mobility last week, according to Financial Times.
