Apple links up with American Express for iPhone 6 mobile payments deal

Company’s next smartphone set to be revealed on September 9.

By Vinod

Apple has reportedly signed a deal with American Express to provide a new iPhone payments system which will allow users of its expected new iPhone 6 to pay for goods and services using their device.

According to several unnamed sources, the credit card provider is the first of several partners secured by Apple before it can launch a mobile payments service, which should debut alongside the iPhone 6’s launch on September 9.

Neither Apple or American Express were available to comment on the rumours.

Integrating a mobile payments system linked to a users’ credit or debit account would greatly simplify the ecommerce system for Apple device users, who so far have seen their devices lag behind Android-powered smartphones. The new system would also include some link to a users iTunes and App Store accounts, allowing customers to purchases goods such as books or games in the real world with payment taken from their digital account.

Apple had previously thought to have carried out successful discussions with both Visa and Mastercard regarding integration with its mobile payments system, giving the company access to a possible customer range in the millions.

The company was also reported last week to be in discussions with chipmaker NXP Semiconductors NV to implement NFC technology into the iPhone 6, which would allow customers to pay by touch with their handsets, as well as other functions such as changing the state of the handset when it is swiped over NFC stickers.
