The launch date for the iPhone 6 and iWatch could be just a fortnight away after Apple confirmed it would be holding a special launch event in Cupertino on September 9.

The company sent out invitations (pictured below) containing the date to media attendees this afternoon, with the taunting additional line, "wish we could say more", lacking the usual clues or hints often present in its previous event invites.

iPhone 6 invite

The invite follows weeks of rumour and speculation concerning what exactly Apple will be doing next, including several allegedly leaked images of a smartphone being released onto the internet this week.

Apple will have high hopes for any new devices launched on September 9, as the company has not announced a new smartphone since the iPhone 5S, which was revealed to the world on September 10, 2013.

News of the upcoming releases sent share prices in the company to a record high last week, showing the widespread commercial appeal of both Apple and its products, with anything announced in two weeks time likely to continue this.
