Apple closes in on Fitbit in wearables race

3.6 million Apple Watches were shipped in Q2.

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple has become the second largest wearable maker, having shipped 3.6 million Apple Watches in Q2.

IDC said the iPhone maker is within striking distance of Fitbit, which sold 4.4 million units during the same period.

The number of wearables shipped in Q2 amounted to 18.1 million units, up from 5.6 million units during the same period a year ago.

The report noted that with Apple’s entry into the wearables market, the gap between smart wearables and basic wearables will start to widen.

Fitbit is leading the market with triple-digit, year-over-year worldwide volume growth and double-digit, year-over-year worldwide revenue and profit growth.

Apple Watch has so far reached sixteen geographic markets and has started agreements with third-party retailers.

Xiaomi of China stood at third place third in the wearables market with 3.1 million shipments in Q2. Garmin and Samsung were in the fourth and fifth places with 0.7 and 0.6 units, respectively.

IDC wearables team research manager Ramon Llamas said: "Anytime Apple enters a new market, not only does it draw attention to itself, but to the market as a whole.

"Its participation benefits multiple players and platforms within the wearables ecosystem, and ultimately drives total volumes higher.

"Now that Apple is officially a part of the wearables market, everyone will be watching to see what other wearable devices it decides to launch, such as smart glasses or hearables."
