App delivery chasm widens as demand surges

71% of IT departments aren’t equipped to meet growing demands, resulting in poor project performance and growing backlogs.

By CBR Staff Writer

Almost three quarters of IT departments are not prepared for the increased demand from the business for custom applications, according to research.

The survey of 470 global IT and business professionals by applications specialist Mendix suggests the inability of technology teams to cope with the change will get worse as businesses look for more custom software in mobile and customer-facing areas.

"The numbers show that businesses increasingly need new apps to innovate and compete in an evolving marketplace but are missing out on opportunities because IT cannot deliver at a fast enough pace," said Derek Roos, chief executive and co-founder of Mendix.

The survey illustrates a growing demand for custom business applications, particularly for customer-facing and mobile apps, cited by 69 per cent and 75 per cent of respondents respectively.

In addition to growing demand, the survey found the business expects shorter turnarounds, requests more changes, and looks to increase its overall involvement in app delivery projects.

As many as 82 per cent of respondents report an IT apps project backlog, while 89 per cent suggest they were unable to reduce their backlog year-on-year.

Almost three-quarters of companies surveyed believe their IT department is failing to consistently meet key project success criteria, including delivering apps on time and on budget.
