Branded personal workstation (PWS) market in the Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) region grew 11% sequentially and 14% year-on-year in unit shipments in fourth quarter of 2009, according to a new report from market intelligence firm IDC.

IDC said that the demand for branded PWS was exceptionally robust in China and was crucial in driving the overall regional market, accounting for 42% of the total shipments.

The branded PWS shipments of all the top three vendors, HP, Dell and Lenovo grew year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2009, with 12.6%, 12.2% and 45.7% growth, respectively. HP has captured 51% of the market share, followed by Dell and Lenovo with 39.7% and 8.5% shares, respectively.

For full year 2009, HP gained the top spot with a market share of 52.2%, followed by Dell with 38.6% and Lenovo with 8.1%. However, HP PWS shipments were down by 12.5%, Dell unit shipment down by 19% while Lenovo posted a unit growth of 56.1%.

Mujin Kang, senior market analyst of Asia/Pacific enterprise hardware research at IDC, said: Although the branded PWS market bounced back strongly in 4Q09, the growth was primarily fuelled by a few key markets such as Australia and China.

Education was the fastest growing vertical with branded PWS shipments surging 59% Y/Y, underpinned by the strong uptake of CAD/CAM and DCC solutions. However, manufacturing remained the largest vertical for branded PWS in the region.
