AOL BUYS LIGHTSPEED TO GET INTO SOAP OPERA, SITCOM WORLD

America Online Inc, Dulles, Virginia is out to increase its base of original content, and its Greenhouse Network new media production company is to acquire LightSpeed Media Inc, Culver City, California on-line production company, and will make it the basis of an entertainment division to be headed by former NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff. LightSpeed created Internet soap operas and comedies such as The Spot and Grape Jam. The aim of the new division is to create on-line shows that will compete not only with other Web sites but with television as well. Terms of the proposed acquisition weren’t disclosed.
