A group of anti-spam campaigners began suspending their spam clearing operations from the internet’s Usenet newsgroup service on Friday to highlight what they say is apathy on the part of internet service providers who are doing little or nothing to prevent the spread of spam. The group last year targeted WorldCom Inc’s UUNet Technologies because of its alleged lackadaisical attitude to preventing spam. Friday’s move was expected to increase Usenet traffic by about 40 percent for an indefinite period. The self-appointed spam police spend a lot of their time issuing cancel messages to news servers, but say that any news server not using the NoCeM tool they recommend is likely to suffer.
