Another multimediapackage on offer from Microsoft is Microsoft Bookshelf for Windows, a set of personal computer-based reference materials for the home, office or school, using animation, sound and information-searching capability. All information fits on a CD-ROM disk and runs on a personal computer with Microsoft Windows 3.0 or Microsoft Windows with multimedia extensions. The user can search through any or all books, move quickly through related information, and copy and paste information to other applications, such as word processors and spreadsheets, from within the Windows environment. The Bookshelf package contains a set of references including Concise Columbia Encyclopedia, a historical reference with 15,000 electronic pages of articles illustrated with pictures, sound and animation; American Heritage Dictionary, a speaking dictionary with definitions and pronunciations of 66,000 words; Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations and Concise Columbia Dictionary of Quotations; and Hammond Atlas of the World, which contains coloured maps of countries, thematic world maps and countries’ flags and national anthems. Microsoft Bookshelf for Windows will be available later this year for around $200 for a single-user copy, and $1,000 for a network licence.
