GEC Plessey Telecommunications Plc is to close its Aycliffe, County Durham telephone handset manufacturing plant by the end of the year. The closure is likely to cost a net 700 jobs, because about 100 of the 890 employees are expected to stay on in a new engineering and marketing unit, and about 100 will be offered transfers to other plants.
