Anonymous member, Havittaja, claimed ownership on Twitter of the DDoS attacks on the Department of Justice and CIA websites.

The CIA webiste was down for 45 minutes and then the U.S. Department of Justice homepage was down for an hour and half.

The "hacktivist" group has claimed responsibility for the takedown of the CIA website twice before. The group reportedly attacked the website back in June 2011 and again in February 2012 in which the CIA website experienced difficulty for hours.

Havittaja wrote on his Twitter account about the DDoS attack after the site had been down for a while, claiming it was done "for the lulz."

Anonymous

The Department of Justice has most recently become a target for the hacking group since the shutdown of Megaupload, in which the group launched Operation Megaupload in retaliation.

The filesharing website had nearly 50 million visitors daily. The site was taken down when the men behind the site were accused of cheating copyright holders out of a hefty $500m over the course of five years.

Anonymous announced on a twitter account associated with the group, @YourAnonNews, that the Operation Megaupload cyberattack was "The Largest Attack Ever by Anonymous as several websites for the White House, Department of Justice, FBI, Universal Music, and Warner Music were disabled."

The CIA has not confirmed yet that a DDoS attack was the reason for its website problem.
