Angry Birds publisher Rovio has reported a 101% year-over-year increase in revenues to EUR152.2m and a net profit after tax of EUR55.5m for 2012.

The increase in revenue was driven by the Angry Birds games. In total Rovio had 263 million active players in December 2012 and total downloads exceeded the billion mark in May 2012.

The consumer products division of the company generated 45% of revenues in 2012 that accounted to EUR68.5m, a three times rise against the EUR22.6m in 2011, driven by the sales of plush toys and other merchandise.

Rovio chief executive Mikael Hed said that the company has grown from a phenomenon to a very successful global business.

"We will continue to strengthen our position in the entertainment business through continuing to innovate on our existing brands, exploring creating new IP as well as exploring opportunities with external parties," Hed added.

In 2012, the company launched four new games including Angry Birds Space, Bad Piggies and Angry Birds Star Wars along with Amazing Alex, which the company bought in and rebranded.
