Android more than doubled the amount of units sold with its operating system, jumping from 60,490,000 units during Q2 2011 to 122,480,000 units in the third quarter this year.
iOS market share was 13.9% for Q3 2012, a 1.1% decrease from its 15% market share during the third quarter in 2011.
RIM’s market share woes continued as it lost more than half of its 11% share since Q3 2011 which now makes up only 5.3% of the market.
Bada’s operating system was the only besides Android that saw an increase, rising to 3% compared to 2.2% last year.
Gartner analysts expect iOS share will grow strongly in the fourth quarter of 2012 because users held on to their replacements in many markets ahead of the iPhone 5 wider roll out. Windows Phone’s share weakened year-on-year as the Windows Phone 8 launch dampened demand of Windows Phone 7 devices.
Apple and Samsung dominated in the manufacturer area with Samsung jumping from 18.7% in Q3 2011 to 22.9% in Q3 2012.
"Both vendors together controlled 45.6% of smartphone market leaving a handful of vendors fighting over a distant third spot said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner.
Nokia fell from its No.3 in Q2 2012 to No. 7 in the third quarter while RIM and HTC also fell behind.
"Both HTC and RIM have seen their sales declining in past few quarters, and the challenges might prevent them from holding on to their current rankings in coming quarters," said Gupta.
While Android celebrates its increasing dominance, Gartner analysts however, expect iOS share to grow strong in Q4 2012 since users kept their replacements in many markets before iPhone 5 wider roll out.
