The project’s first phase, due to be completed during October 2001, will create an indoor wireless communications system that will expand mobile phone users’ wireless communications access. The upgraded network will improve indoor wireless coverage in some 600 hotels, shopping centers and office buildings in Shanghai in 2001. By 2003, it is anticipated that some 2,000 of Shanghai’s buildings will be incorporated into the network.
Shanghai Mobile Communications Company contracted Andrew to assist with improving their existing GSM network in Shanghai, with the goal of providing seamless coverage between outdoor and indoor signals. The backbone of the expanded citywide wireless communications network is Andrew Corporation’s HELIAX RN Series fire retardant coaxial cables and connectors manufactured at the Andrew facility in Suzhou, China. In addition to product, Andrew is also providing installation, on-site support services, and training. The Andrew Institute, the training arm of Andrew, has a custom-built training facility in Suzhou.
Shanghai currently has over five million mobile phone subscribers and an average of one million roaming subscribers. With the support of the China Ministry of Information Industry, the Shanghai City Government, and the Shanghai Mobile Communications Company, the first phase of the new communications network will open in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit scheduled for October 20 to 21, 2001. It is anticipated that this summit will bring 12,000 additional visitors, from some 21 countries to Shanghai.
This project is helping Shanghai showcase its communications capabilities, said Mr. Liu Zuqiu, Country Manager, Andrew China. As China continues its rapid growth in mobile telecommunications, Andrew China is in a strong position to assist with the creation, expansion, and upgrading of wireless systems throughout the country. We are proud of our role in improving Shanghai’s wireless connections from the historic Bund to the cutting-edge, high tech Pudong Development Zone.
