As well as the eight- to 64-processor scalabale parallel processing system – apparently to be dubbed Power Parallel RISC/6000 SP/1 and new models in the RS/6000 line (CI No 2,085), IBM is expected to unveil first fruit of its development work with network server company Auspex Systems Inc, Santa Clara, California tomorrow. There are also expected to be at least two low-end, low-cost single chip RS/6000 models, the M20 and M20A PowerStations, along with mid-range systems, and upgrades to existing machines. The SP/1 is expected to start at $300,000 with eight processors rising to $2.7m for the 64-processor model, which will ncludes IBM’s new proprietary Vulcan data switch.
