The main problem with moving the AS/400 to a PowerPC chip set is that applications will need to be recompiled using the new ILE compilers: moreover the source code will probably need a considerable amount of tweaking to get it running properly – not a pleasant prospect, particularly in the period where conventional and PowerPC models will be co-existing in the line.
