NEC Kansai, a 100%-owned subsidiary of NEC Corp, says it has been awarded the 1991 Deming Prize for quality control in semiconductor manufacturing: specifically, the award was given for NEC Kansai’s restructuring of its product mix from monochrome tubes to colour tubes, for extending total quality control techniques to advanced products such as VLSIs, ULSIs and compound semiconductors. This resulted in total sales for the company rising by 41%, sales per employee rising by 40% and sales of new products increasing four-fold. NEC comments that this is not the first time it has taken home the Deming Prize, which was established in 1951 to recognise achievement in Total Quality Control.
