IBM Microelectronics in Hopewell Junction, New York has come out with the LS4000 Adapter, a programmable adaptor board designed to enable advanced modem, facsimile, telephone voice messaging and audio processing into a single add-in personal computer board. The features can be run concurrently. Based on the company’s Mwave technology, LS4000 functions consist of a modem running at up to 9,600bps, Group III facsimile at up to 9,600bps, telephone voice messaging with the capabilities of current voice mail systems plus 3:1 speech data compression, True-Pitch variable speed playback and speakerphone functions. The audio function includes 16-bit play and record, MIDI synthesis and digital mixing. It is compatible with Windows 3.1, and samples – as described – cost $215. Software upgrades are $20 to $70. An OS/2 version is set for year-end.
