Meanwhile 88open, which claims some 80% of its business comes from Europe, has opened an office in the UK, under Steve Heath, from Motorola’s semiconductor operation. He will be based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Implementation centres are already available in the UK, France, Germany and Norway. 88open now has over 100 members, and is estimated to be fourth in the league for open software with around 1,000 packages, behind Rios and the Sparc with 4,000 or so each, and the R-Series with 1,800.
