Jamming the wires with announcements, Lotus has also committed itself to supply Lotus Notes for Santa Cruz Operation Inc’s Open Desktop, in a move, it says, to break out of the personal computer market. Hailed as the first work groupware application, Notes has unfortunately not achieved the sales expected since its launch in 1989, and its alliance with Santa Cruz was described by the company as a timely decision. Lotus Notes features include a document database (a non-relational database), a document library, the ability to store, move and forward mail, and the capability to connect news wires. Lotus Notes for Santa Cruz Open Desktop 2.0 is scheduled for release by year-end.
