AMR MAY DUMP AMERICAN AIRLINES TO CONCENTRATE ON COMPUTER SERVICES

By CBR Staff Writer

In a shock announcement yesterday, American Airlines parent AMR Corp said it may dump the airline and turn itself into a pure airline computer services and consultancy company with the Sabre reservation system at its core. The company, which lost $985m in 1992, complained that rival airlines have been allowed to continue operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection almost indefinitely. It is to invest $195m in Canadian Airlines to get a computer services contract worth $2,000m over 20 years.
