The contracts, which cover the South West and South East of Scotland, have a value of around GBP26 million and GBP16 million per annum respectively. Each will run for five years, with the option to extend thereafter by a further two years.

Responsibility for the two contracts is due to be transferred to Amey on the 1 April 2001, although mobilisation is currently underway. Under the terms of the contract, Amey will provide road services for the day to day maintenance of the trunk road network, including professional and managerial services, undertaking repairs to the fabric of the network, salting the roads and keeping them free of snow.

Brian Staples, Amey’s Chief Executive, said:

We are delighted that the Scottish Executive has announced its intention to award us these contracts which confirms our position as the leading support services provider to the UK’s trunk road network.

We have an excellent track record in trunk road maintenance, particularly as a major supplier to the Highways Agency in England. We already work in Scotland on the M74/A74 and have an innovative and forward looking partnership with North Lanarkshire Council worth GBP100 million over the next 10 years for the provision of road maintenance.

Through the tender process for these contracts we have demonstrated our commitment to deliver the quality of service and innovation that the Scottish Executive was expecting, while at the same time delivering real value for money to the Scottish taxpayer.
