AMERITECH PROPOSES TO OPEN UP LOCAL TELEPHONE SERVICES

The prospects don’t look too good given the latest Supreme Court ruling on signalling (CI No 2,113), but as part of its root-and-branch shake-up, Ameritech Corp is proposing that it open up local telephone service to all comers in its territory, so that subscribers could choose their local carrier as they now choose long-distance supplier, in return for being allowed to enter the long-distance business.
