Ameritech Corp is launching a digital video network upgrade that by the end of the decade will connect 6m customers in its region to interactive information and entertainment services, and traditional cable TV services: it will increase Ameritech’s capital spending by $4,400m to a total of about $29,000m over the next 15 years; it will begin delivering late this year the first of its video services; Ameritech will continue its fibre optics expansion program begun in 1992, and plans to add 1m customers a year to the interactive video network; the network will employ a mix of broadband switches, video servers, fibre optic and coaxial cables; the firm is enlisting partners to develop, package and market cable TV programming and new interactive video programming.
