Ameritech Corp and IBM Corp’s IBM Global Network will be running a trial next month with 200 Chicago area customers of Ameritech of Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line access to the Internet. The hope is that the technology will enable customers to interact with data networks and the Internet at speeds more than 50 times faster than over a ordinary low-tech telephone line. Ameritech will use modems from Westell Technologies Inc for the initial trial, which will enable customers to receive or download information at speeds of up to 1.5Mbps.
