Ameritech Corp has launched a facsimile service in Chicago for people that have a non-impact printer but no fax machine, fax board or modem: LaserLink simply requires a small device to be attached to the Hewlett-Packard Co LaserJet or DeskJet or AT-compatible laser printer, whereupon it can print out facsimile messages sent over the phone; documents are sent to a mailbox run by the phone company and can either be picked up on the laser printer or sent to another location; software that substitutes for a facsimile modem is also available for transmitting messages.
