Computer power supply maker American Power Conversion Corp will invest another $65m at four Irish plants, creating 1,000 new jobs in the next three years. The investments will be at the plant in Galway where Digital Equipment Corp generated such an absurd outburst of hysteria when it announced that it would vacate it, and which was occupied by American Power in October 1993 (CI No 2,256), and at new ones in Castlebar, Drogheda and Gillogue, County Clare; these will be for research and development, international distribution and European telemarketing. The investments will make Ireland the company’s sole European base for manufacturing and distribution, and the jobs created should more than make up for the 770 or so lost when DEC closed.
