As reported, AMR Corp’s American Airlines won the Unix Expo award for excellece in open systems last month for its distributed Integrated Capacity Planning System, which runs at the airline’s headquarters within the vast Dallas-Fort Worth airport campus. Using a MIPS 6280 database server and Epic data store, the system runs on a network of 100 or so workstations from MIPS, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun, and will apparently pay for itself within a year through the savings on mainframe usage time.
