AMDAHL SAYS DEMAND FOR 5890 PROCESSOR AND 6380E DISK STORAGE SYSTEM RESPONSIBLE FOR IMPROVED RESULTS

Amdahl Corp, Sunnyvale, California, which reported net profit up 943% and sales up 59% yesterday (see Company Results, p5), cited strong customer demand for its 5890 processor and the new double-capacity disk storage system, the 6380E, for its improved results; president John Lewis commented that although the company expects a good year, normal price erosion combined with planned spending increases in marketing and research and development will impact operating income over the balance of the year.
