AMDAHL RESPONDS TO 3090S WITH 10% TO 14% PRICE CUTS…

By CBR Staff Writer

Amdahl Corp this week responded to IBM’s 3090S announcement by cutting prices on its two mainframe series and insisting that its 5990-1400 is still the most powerful 370-type mainframe, despite IBM’s claims for the 3090-600S. The price cuts on key 5890 and 5990 models range from 10% to 14%, and upgrade charges are cut 12% to 17% – IBM last week actually raised some upgrade prices. Amdahl followed IBM in raising the price of maintenance – but only on the 5890s – by 5%. With these changes, chairman John Lewis noted, our 5990-1400 processor continues to be the price performance leader, in addition to being what we believe is the most powerful computing system available in the System/370 compatible marketplace. The 1400 delivers its performance from just four CPUs, against six for the IBM 600S, and has a 10nS cycle against IBM’s 15nS.
