AMDAHL POURS SOFTWARE AND SERVICES INTO NEW A+ BUSINESS

By CBR Staff Writer

Hoping part of the burgeoning market for systems integration services will find a way to its door, Amdahl Corp has created a software, services and consulting business it’s calling the A+ Software Group which starts life with 180 staff drawn from within the company. It will offer a range of home-grown and third party software – some of which is already sold by different units within the company – beginning with an application management suite. For security and operations management Amdahl is offering an administration framework and single sign-on technology licensed from Compagnie des Machines Bull SA’s OpenMaster systems management environment. The A+ group will sell the components as A+OpenMaster and A+AccessMaster respectively. Amdahl’s Enterprise Systems Unit has been selling the Bull software for a year or so. For performance management Amdahl is offering A+Contour developed by Palo Alto, California-based company Network Intelligence Inc in which Amdahl has acquired a minority stake. A+Contour uses an Oracle database to store collected data. Amdahl already resells Network Intelligence’s local area management products. Backup, archive, retrieval and filing services are to be provided by the Legato Systems Inc NetWorker for Unix and NT products while Novadigm Inc’s Enterprise Desktop Manager is used for software distribution tasks. Both products are already offered by other parts of Amdahl. The A+ Software Group says it will license and build other products for the application management suite and create additional suites for the web. Other A+ products Amdahl already offers, including its A+Edition Unix systems software add-ons, won’t fall into the A+ Software Group’s remit.
