Amdahl Corp says that although it will move to 1M-bit static RAMs in the larger 5990 mainframe models in the fourth quarter of next year (CI No 1,310) it has been using statics – 256Ks, presumably – for main memory from the start in the 5990s: the parts have a 55nS access time.
