AMDAHL EASES ISV CHARGES WITH MULTI-NODE SERVER

By CBR Staff Writer

A little-noticed aspect of Amdahl Corp’s recent updated CMOS mainframe roadmap (CI No 3,437), was support for multiple-servers – serial numbers – within a single box. It’s important, because as the Meta Group observes, applications can be isolated on discreet processing nodes and ISV charges can be minimized by having four smaller CPUs within a single system rather than a more costly license for a large system with single serial number. This issue of ISV license pricing on high-end servers is one that’s becoming of increasing concern to Unix vendors as they develop data centers that will effectively become the next generation of mainframes.
