AMD UNVEILS “CLEAN” AM486…

By CBR Staff Writer

As well as announcing encouraging results for its fiscal second quarter (see page five) Advanced Micro Devices Inc duly unveiled its clean Am486 version of Intel Corp’s 80486, and says that the part will be shipping this quarter: the parts include the 40MHz Am486SX product and a 33MHz Am486SXLV device capable of 3.3 Volt operation; both versions of the Am486SX microprocessor, available in 168-pin grid array packages, are priced at $185 each in 1,000-unit quantities, and the Sunnyvale firm says that it reckons that means that manufacturers can offer systems with 21% better performance at no cost premium; they are fabricated in a 0.7-micron triple-layer metal CMOS process.
