Advanced Micro Devices Inc is expected to boost the speed of its K6-2 processor to 500MHz today (Monday), presumably to mark the opening of the Intel Developers Forum in Palm Springs. The upgrade will enable it to compete more effectively with Intel in the budget space, following Intel’s recent introduction of the 500MHz Celeron part. IBM Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co are both expected to be users of the chip. Prices are expected to be comparable with the Celeron. Further clock speed increases aren’t likely until the K6-2 moves from .25 micron to .18 micron technology, some time next year.
