The departure of Henri Richard comes after three consecutive quarterly losses for the company, but the company said in a statement that the move was of his own accord and on completely amicable terms.

It also comes just a few weeks before AMD unveils its long-awaited Barcelona quad-core Opteron server processors, with which it hopes to catch up to and overtake Intel.

Richard was quoted in the AMD statement saying he is to move into a different business segment after 20 years in the PC business, and could not resist taking a parting shot at rival Intel.

I am leaving AMD at a time when the company is in position to break the monopoly that plagues this industry, AMD quoted him as saying.

AMD is suing Intel for alleged antitrust law violations, and rarely passes up an opportunity to remind people of this fact.
