AMD restructures business into four units

Expects to integrate its x86 processor and graphics technologies

By CBR Staff Writer

AMD has announced the reorganization of the company into four divisions based on products, technology, marketing, and customers, in a move it said will enable it to optimize its operations and integrate its x86 processor and graphics technologies.

The company said the products group will be led by Rick Bergman, with Jeff VerHeul heading the division’s processor solutions engineering team. The advanced technology group will be led by Chekib Akrout, the marketing group by Nigel Dessau, and the customer group by Emilio Ghilardi. AMD also said Randy Allen, senior vice president of the its computing solutions arm, has decided to leave the company.

Dirk Meyer, president and CEO at AMD, said: We are tightening our focus on delivering the winning products and platforms our customers want based on AMD’s microprocessor and graphics technologies. The next generation of innovation in the computing industry will be grounded in the fusion of microprocessor and graphics technologies.

The company reported a net loss of $416m in its recent first quarter 2009 on revenue down 21% at $1.17 billion due to the decline in demand for its microprocessors in the global economic downturn. However, it also completed a deal to form the US-headquartered $5 billion semiconductor foundry, Globalfoundries, a joint venture with Advanced Technology Investment Company and Mubadala Development Company of Abu Dhabi. It appointed Bruce Claflin as chairman of the board, replacing Hector Ruiz, who resigned to become chairman of Globalfoundries.
